The workshop involves two sequential sessions. These are:

SESSION 1: 4.00pm – 5.15pm

‘The shadow side of learning, leadership and culture in emergency services organisations.’

This paper (by Fiona Martin, Susan Long and Christine Owen) will discuss and analyse observed dynamics of leadership in emergency services organisations in Australia where a number of unconscious basic assumptions and archetypes have been identified. As researchers, consultants and practitioners, we draw on our collective experiences in these organisations to examine the interplay of tensions and contradictions in the role of emergency services leaders and their constituencies (communities and the politicians they serve).

The presenters (Fiona Martin & Susan Long) would like to present for approximately 30 minutes on the key themes of their recent ISPSO New York paper, followed by about 40 minutes of workshop/discussion with participants to further develop the ideas.

SESSION 2: 5.15pm - 6.30pm

‘The tensions created by changing spatial and psychic walls – early childhood education and care centres in transition’.
Presented by Jo Stuart and Rob Ryan

The consulting project was to analyse the current culture of three , local government children’s service ‘hubs’ which had been consolidated from many small centres. The presenting problem was described with the analogy: ‘We used to be the equivalent of the corner “milk bar” and now we are supermarkets’. There was considerable tension in the hub staff and low levels of trust in management. In this mini-workshop, we will describe the situation and explore our diagnosis, inviting participant engagement with this ‘work in progress’.

DINNER: 6.30pm for 7.00pm start

In addition to enjoying general collegiality, there will be an opportunity for people to briefly present their reflections, musings and ideas in relation to any ISPSO matters, including the recent Annual Meeting in New York (held June 24 -30, 2019) and the planned one in Berlin (June 25-July 1, 2020).
