Program: "Beyond Tribalism"
In many parts of the world, from the Middle East, to the European Union, to communities in the US, we are facing seemingly intractable conflicts that elude peaceful resolution. According to this year’s guest presenter, Harvard Kennedy School Lecturer Hugh O’Doherty, “I think that what lies at the core of intractable conflict is what I refer to as the paradox of identity: each group believes that in order to guarantee its survival it must maintain and protect its identity, yet it is exactly attachment to identity that each group must sacrifice if peace is to occur. Unraveling the dynamics of this paradox may help explain why some conflicts seem so intractable and why they prove immune to traditional techniques of diplomatic and political mediation.”

We invite you to join us in an exploration of these ideas, their implications and their connection to our own work at the 14th Annual ISPSO New York Regional Meeting on Saturday, November 7th, from 9:00am to 5:00pm at the William Alanson White Institute, 20 West 74th St., New York City.

To kick off the NY Regional Meeting, please join us, along with Hugh, for cocktails on Friday evening from 6:00pm to 7:30pm at the William Alanson White Institute, followed by an informal dinner at a nearby restaurant.

On Saturday morning, Hugh will present themes from his forthcoming book on identity and tribalism. In the afternoon, participants will explore their own experiences in peer group discussions, linking to ideas stimulated from the morning, followed by a plenary exploration of the themes from the day.

The NY Regional Meeting will conclude on Saturday afternoon with a wine and cheese reception followed by an informal local dinner for anyone interested in further collegiality and discussion.
Registration information including a link to register online is attached along with a full program description and presenter biography. The Friday cocktail reception and Saturday meeting are open to non-ISPSO members.

Please encourage any interested member or non-member to join us.
