PROGRAM: "Gender and Sexuality @ Work"
Gender and sexual identity are a part of the national conversation, particularly in the wake of the recent developments under the new U.S. Presidency. This year’s presenter, Jack Drescher, M.D., has been on the forefront of thinking about gender and sexual identity issues for many years. As a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, Past President of the Group for Advancement of Psychiatry and a Past President of the APA’s New York County Psychiatric Society, and a member of APA’s DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual) Workgroup on Sexual and Gender Identity Disorders that resulted in significant changes, Jack is one of the foremost voices in both practice and research.
As issues of gender and sexual identity continue to permeate cultural and political discussions, it is important to consider and understand their impact on organizational thinking and practice. How do these issues impact our work with organizations and how do we meet the challenges that they reveal? In the Saturday morning session, Jack will present his ideas, focusing on the American Psychiatric Association and its response to gender and sexual identification, organized around the following themes:
2) Homosexuality (LGB);
3) Changes to the DSM; and
4) the current issues regarding Transgender.
In the afternoon, participants will have the opportunity to explore their own work and experiences, linking to ideas stimulated from the morning. We will conclude with a plenary review of the themes from the day and our individual and collective learning, followed by a wine and cheese reception.
